FIVE STAR PRISON CELL
MELBOURNE METAL

Five Star Prison Cell was an Australian four-piece band from Melbourne whose uncompromising approach to technical metal made them one of the country's most distinctive and challenging heavy acts. Emerging in 2004 during the waning days of nu-metal and the rise of metalcore, they carved out a unique sonic territory that drew comparisons to The Dillinger Escape Plan, Meshuggah, and the eclectic vocal gymnastics of Mike Patton.
Variously labelled tech metal, math rock, mathcore, and progressive metal, Five Star Prison Cell resisted easy categorisation. The band themselves embraced the 'dubious' nature of genre labels, describing their approach as non-conformist songwriting that could switch time, pace, genre, and style at the drop of a hat.
Their sound was characterised by unusual time signatures, dissonant guitar riffs, and a vocal approach that traversed everything from melodic crooning to visceral death growls - sometimes within the same song. Over seven years and three studio albums, they built a devoted cult following while steadfastly refusing to dilute their complex musical vision for mainstream appeal.

Five Star Prison Cell was formed in 2004 by musicians from various established Melbourne and Queensland bands. Vocalist Adam 'Hutch' Glynn came from Melbourne metal outfit Frankenbok. Drummer Marc Whitworth had played with Gold Coast band Tension, while guitarist Marek Holain and bassist Cameron Macdonald had performed together in Extra Virgin.
The project was initially conceived as a one-off studio experiment, but when Extra Virgin disbanded, the four musicians recognised the creative potential in what they had begun. What started as a side project evolved into a full-time commitment to creating some of Australia's most technically demanding and sonically adventurous metal.
In April 2011, following the Matriarch tour cycle, Five Star Prison Cell announced their disbandment. In a statement to fans, they explained there was no specific reason, no fallout, no 'creative differences' - issues they had fortunately never encountered. Instead, as they acknowledged, people grow older, priorities change, and what individuals derive from such an endeavour can shift over time.
THE INTERVENING YEARS:
2014 saw the formation of Silt – a more relaxed avenue from Marek, Cam, Marc & Extra Virgin vocalist Adam Kingsley. They release a one-off album “Objects At Rest” in 2016.
Cam Macdonald joined Sydney experimental rock trio Hashshashin on the Art As Catharsis label in 2016.
Marc Whitworth formed his noise/metal solo project X’s For Eyes in 2021.
Adam Glynn returned to Frankenbok in 2024 after a 22-year absence, rejoining original guitarist Aaron Butler in the band's current line-up.
Five Star Prison Cell stand as a testament to one of Australia's most uncompromising and technically accomplished metal bands - a group that, in their own words, never tried to 'dumb it down' for wider recognition or mass appeal.
