Initially forming in the early 90's in Melbourne, Australia, and after a few early lineup changes, by mid 1996 Alarum had solidified as a 4 piece and released their BLUEPRINT demo. The band quickly gained acclaim with their signature sound characterised by rapid tempo changes, intricate guitar work, and unconventional song structures. Alarum's influences span a wide range of genres, including progressive rock and metal, jazz fusion, and death metal, allowing them to craft a sound that is both innovative and challenging.

Alarum's debut album, FLUID MOTION (1998), established them as a formidable presence in the metal community. However, it was their second album, EVENTUALITY (2004), that garnered international attention, showcasing their ability to seamlessly integrate complex rhythms, melodic interludes, and aggressive metal elements. This album solidified their reputation for pushing the boundaries of metal music.
Their following releases, including NATURAL CAUSES (2011) and CIRCLE'S END (2020), continued to explore new musical territories, reflecting their growth and maturity as musicians. Alarum’s work continues to be praised for its musicianship, creativity, and the ability to balance technical complexity with listenability. Their critically acclaimed album RECONTINUE (2024) demonstrated again that Alarum are masters of true progressive metal.
